Why CAYO Resort in Crete Is The Perfect Winter Escape 2022

In 2021, I did the almost unthinkable, I travelled *gasp*. Not only did I travel but I stayed at the trendy and glamorous CAYO Resort & Spa for a couple of days and, for those unfamiliar with it, it's definitely a place to have on the map.

Like many, I was desperate for a break from this foggy England, and to catch up on quality with my favourite people. We had a small window where we could all travel together. We were looking for, nice views, clear water beaches, good food, epic weather, and somewhere easy to get to.

COVID restrictions locked off a lot of paradise-like destinations, but then Crete, and CAYO came calling. To get there we hired a car [the closest airport being Heraklion] and the drive to the resort was one of the most exhilarating parts of the trip. Admittedly, the windy roads down the mountain felt a little stomach-churning at times, but it was thrilling, and the views were just *chefs kiss* – all of which really added to the full experience.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly staff who parked our car as we check-in. The lobby had the perfect blend of a rustic aesthetic with a sexy modern spin. Right around the corner from the lobby was the bar area themed with green tiles, falling ivy plants, and earth-coloured decor, and we sat having our first sip of the stay.

The floor-to-ceiling glass walls meant that you had 180° sea views from there too. As we are shown to our private villa, we are given two options, a golf cart or the elevator. We choose the latter, but I will say that this was not your usual style elevator, it honestly felt like going up and down a cable cart, with a direct view to the beach further down the mountain.

As we have a quiet stroll towards the lift, we walk past the resort's two very large and luxurious communal pools (emphasis on the luxurious). It was quiet and serene and all I wanted to do was flick off my flip-flops and jump in.

As we walked towards our villa, I could already tell we were in for a treat. It had three floors, with a foyer, three large double bedrooms, a gym, a private pool with a small patio, and a large balcony on the top floor with drop-dead views. The bottom floor window faced the inside of the pool, meaning we could take underwater pictures.

For dinner, the resort has its own restaurant by the pool, where the water is lit up like a galaxy and you can eat outside under the stars. The menu was extensive and mouth-watering, offering a selection of food for different dietary requirements.

Although there was a shuttle bus that would drive you to other restaurants by the beach, there was honestly no need to leave the resort as we had everything we needed there and more.

A shop on-site sold clothes and jewellery from Greek designers, there's is also a Spa which offers features such as large heated indoor pool, steam room, three treatment rooms, sauna, hair salon, and a nail salon, giving you all the wellness escapism you need in one stop, and even an Amphitheater offering theatrical and musical performances throughout the day.

The day before returning, the hotel provided a lateral flow test, free of charge for all guests, to ensure a smooth departure. The trip came to a close and we took one last dip at the pool before heading to our delicious buffet breakfast.

All-in-all the trip was phenomenal. It’s the perfect getaway for families, friends or couples looking to relax and enjoy good weather with lots of privacy and state-of-the-art facilities. To top it off, everything about CAYO was instagrammable. The views, the pool areas, every inch of the villa, and even the elevator trip was deserving of a selfie. It was one big Instax moment, and after the year that we’ve had, we are all deserving of a little break from this slice of Crete paradise.
